International Summer Visitors

Karen Linklater, Dr Yogesh Verma and Anne KorirThe Thames Cancer Registry was host to two international visitors for four weeks at the end of May and beginning of June this year. Mrs Anne Korir, Cancer Registry Supervisor, from Nairobi in Kenya and Dr Yogesh Verma, Head of the Department of Pathology, from Sikkim in North East India had both obtained Calum Muir Scholarships from the International Association of Cancer Registries to visit TCR. The registries in Nairobi and Sikkim have only been operational for the last two to three years and this was an excellent opportunity for Anne and Yogesh to see how an established registry worked.

Their visit was coordinated by Karen Linklater, one of the Registry's senior Information Analysts. The first week of the their visit was spent on general Registry business, taking a day in each department to see how the data are collected, input, quality assured, processed and output. Anne and Yogesh were then given a small project each to work; Anne concentrated on male breast cancer and Yogesh on penile cancer. Each student was mentored by a member of the Information Team and at the end of the stay they both gave a presentation on the work they had been doing. They were also able to produce a poster to take back to their own registries.

The Thames Cancer Registry will be hosting international summer visitors again in 2007, from 21st May to 15th June. If you are interested in joining us at TCR during this period you should contact Professor Henrik Møller (henrik.moller@kcl.ac.uk).
